The following is a story of my life after I got drafted by God to fight the minions of darkness. Jehovah of the Holy Bible exists and holy warriors are needed to defend us.

If you’re wise, you’ll set this book down now and walk away. Keep your illusions; they won’t hurt you. Learn too much, open the door that is better left closed, and you’ll be fighting by my side.

Hero Curse The Paladin Files Book 1 eBook Jack J Lee

I am big fan of sci-fi/fantasy writing and I'm also a sucker for a free Kindle book, so I couldn't resist giving "Hero's Curse" a try as I was browsing for a new book series. I was not disappointed! If you liked Neil Gaiman's "American Gods", or L. Jagi Lamplighter's "Prospero's Daughter" series, you will enjoy this book as well.

Victor "Vic" Paladin has made a peaceful quiet living robbing ATMs until he is confronted by a troll one night in the midst of a job. He kills and disposes of the troll and sets off a series of encounters and battles with angels, trolls, and other magical beings as a whole universe of gods and supernatural other-worlds are revealed to him. He discovers that he is from a long line of Paladins, a magical knight of Jehovah -- and now he's been drafted by God Himself.

His "guardian" is a streetwise angel, "B", who from the description is sort of a cross between Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Michael Duncan's character Frankie Figs from "The Whole Nine Yards". I found the character "B" and his dialogue with Vic very entertaining.

Jack J. Lee's writing is terse and gritty -- don't go looking for flowery prose and pages of background information ala George R.R. Martin or S.M. Stirling. The author introduces us to many characters and caricitures to flesh out the unseen war going on between the Norse Gods and Jehovah, some done well and others sketched out just enough to be interesting. The story line moves along at a good pace, and I found myself engrossed and unable to put it down. There has been criticism that his detailed description of weaponry and ammunition is unnecessary but to be honest, it fit well within the story line and was in keeping with the characters.

If you enjoy this genre and can take the religious references tongue-in-cheek and with a grain of salt, this is definitely a good read. While this book was free, I have no problem with buying the next installment, "Mythic Hero" -- I'm sure it will be worth the money.

Hero Curse The Paladin Files Book 1 eBook Jack J Lee Reviews

This was a very fast paced and exciting book throughout. I quickly found I couldn't put it down. I liked the whole 'bad boy goes good, but not by choice' thing. And it's a completely different take on religion as well. It was a little too technical for me in places, but I guess if you like guns/ammo/things that go boom, that's fine.

I really liked "B", Victor's guardian angel. Very cool, hard-assed, in your face type. Definitely not the typical angel. It seems he really wasn't trying too hard to help Victor. I think maybe the "bad guys" in this could have been a little more developed. Like the other angels. There really wasn't much said about why they were doing what they were doing. But I guess that wasn't the main point of the book anyway. I hated that certain people in the book had to die, but I guess all books/movies can't have a truly happy ending. And really, Victor Paladin seems like he's better being a loner. It has a good bit of comic relief as well.

All in all a really good book. It will definitely make you question your faith or lack thereof.
I usually don't like religious fiction. I usually don't like post-apocalyptic fiction. I decided to take a chance with this book, and within 3 days I have burned through all 5 books by this author (both the Hero series and the Sustainable Earth series). I have to say they are both excellent! Now hurry up and publish the sequels!!! LOL
Grunge-y, interesting to read and has a ton of neat facts about everything from mythology to reptile physiology interspersed, but the main character is a little too perfect (except for in regards to a love figure), and the ending felt a bit rushed to me. The world of the book is fabulous and writing solid - I'd definitely read another - but it just has a few flaws that give it a four rating, not five.
I bought this book after reading the Soul Survivors series by this author. This book was not any where near as good as that series. I'm glad I read the other books first because I absolutely loved them. If I would have read this one first I wouldn't have followed up on the authors other stuff.

Fortunately he's come a long ways since this book was written. So I still recommend Jack Lee, I just didn't enjoy this particular book.
I have to say I really enjoyed the book. The author came up with a world that is a mixture of magic, science, religion and technology that has no business working, but for whatever reason it does.

Best of all, I got it for free!

The gist of the story is that the god of the Jews, Christians, and Muslims actually does exist. But not quite the way any of those religions view him.

Magic also exists, and so do all the various deities humans have worshiped over the years.

There is a bit of a cold war going on between Jehovah and the various other deities, and humans have been recruited to be the proxies of Jehovah.

Lots of neat magical weapons and some non-magical ones as well.

A intriguing glimpse into the machinations of Jehovah's bureaucracy.

An incredibly imaginative book.

If you take religion, especially Christianity seriously, you should stay away from this book. It will aggravate you.

It appears to me that the end of the book is a bit of a setup for a sequel.
The book starts very slow, and I almost put it down in disgust about 15% of the way through. But I prefer to get at least 1/4 of the way through before giving up. I'm glad I did.

Victor is NOT your classic knight-in-shining-armor hero. Which is what makes him the perfect hero here. He doesn't care about playing by the rules. He gets the job done in whatever way is necessary.

Every time I thought I had figured out what was going to happen next, the book threw a twist at me. (The huge twist at the end made my jaw drop, and even having finished the book, I keep wondering if what seems to have happened, really happened.)

The only issue I had with the book was Vic's companions. They came across as too knowledgeable and able to do anything (except fight).
