The Spell of the Yukon and Other Verses Robert William Service 9781146146661 Books Reviews

I grew up listening to the poems of Robert W. Service being read on the radio so I was happy to find this collection. Although, I'm no critic, I'm quite sure Service is not considered to be a great poet. But the stories that he told are memorable and the characters colorful. I've never forgotten Dangerous Dan McGrew nor the lady that's known as Lou. And, lo these many years later, I still remember the cadence of the poems and many of the images they evoked. You don't have to grow up in the Yukon to fall under the spell.
This short book, originally published in 1907, contains some of Robert Service's best known poems, including Shooting of Dan McGrew, Cremation of Sam McGee and Call of the Wild.

The material in the book is first rate.

I'll agree with some of the other reviewers about the lack of links in the table of contents. But lighten up guys. It's a free download; you can't have it all for nothing.

Despite the lack of links in the table of contents, anyone interested in Robert Service should download this one. It contains some of his best known poems.
I read to a group of elders in an assisted living facility. One of the wonderful things that happens in our time, is that someone can remember a classic they enjoyed in the past, and within minutes, I can have it on my iPad, and be reading it to them. Often, as in this case, the cost is 99 cents or less. Dangerous Dan McGrew was easy to access and led to Sam McGee, the "Ballad of Bessie's Boil (not in this collection), and some research on the life of Robert W. Service. The testimonies we heard from them on how literature broadens life brought a lump to my throat.
I ordered this tome because one of its poems was referenced at John McCain's funeral. McCain learned one of these poems while in the Hanoi Hilton. The man in the cell next to him tapped out the poem and over hours and days of hearing it, McCain memorized it. The book is full of poetry referencing the rough and tumble times in the Yukon. I certainly recommend this collection of poems to anyone who wants to "feel" what life was like in those days.
I’ve been a fan for 50 years
since I first read old ‘McGee’
memorized to keep them near
as I explored the world to see

the paperback books I bought
hard use did tend to break
cause these I often sought
when danger spread it’s ache

now I’m a bit older
the wiser I’m not so sure
but this digital version
is handy for that chore

what is there is excellent
most of the truly great
but a few are absent
that should be there straight

I will not list them
as that is personal taste
but they saved my life you ken
with inspiration for that race

so now to the questions
that this rating page did raise
I liked all of Service’s work
some are truly great

his work has had a great impact
just look at this response
his words and rhyming justly tracked
unweather’ed just like bronze

what you should deliberate
is the selection of the best
as ‘Lost in the Wild..’ did not rate
what about the missing rest

what works would I compare this to
maybe some of Poe’s
or Byrons, Pope, or the Dryden queue
they all rhymed some for me and you

so we come to the end
of this quick spate of verse
hope it answered what I ken’d
as I did this burst
If you want to add some Robert Service to your library, if you just want to refresh your recollection of a favorite poem or two, or if you just want a brief survey of Service's work or a brief reading entertainment, this free book is a fine choice.

Some freebies of poetry collections are formatted so badly that the poems are virtually unreadable, (for example, T. S. Elliot's "Wasteland"). That's not a problem here. Service's work is so rhythmic and muscular it could probably survive weird formatting, but that's not an issue since the formatting, while less than ideal, leaves the poems comprehensible.

There are two Tables of Contents. The first one is just poem titles and it is active. The second Table of Contents follows a brief prefatory poem, and lists titles and first lines. That Table is not active and is helpful only if you remember a first line but not a title, ( say for "The Men That Don't Fit In" or "The Heart of the Sourdough" or some other lesser known poems).

Most of Service's most well known poems are in this collection, which is unusual for a freebie, so this is a particularly good value and rewarding find. At a minimum it's good for a download and a skim.
